I am still not too great at the HDR look. I had a great vision of how this shot was going to look but I cannot seem to even get close to what I wanted. Maybe I will try to do a couple more...

Over the weekend I had the opportunity to take some rather nice cars for a drive through the mountains (map of area we drove). It was around 65 degrees and the leaves are all starting to change so needless to say the conditions were perfect. I would have loved to take the new rabbit out on the winding mountain roads but I had to say goodbye to her for the day. To take the rabbit's place were a Mercedes SL55 AMG with 493 hp and the Lamborghini Gallardo with 495 hp. Needless to say they were absolutely amazing to drive. Both the handeling and acceleration were crazy good. After this experience I can definitely see how some people love to drive. I think we were on the road for around 6 hours and the whole trip felt more like 45 minutes. Unfortunately getting back into the rabbit wa a little sad. At one point in time I thought my engine had a nice rumble and when I put the car in sport mode it had decent acceleration. Do not get me wrong I still love my car, but damn.

I just took my camera bag out of the closet for the first time since I moved into my new house and realized that I had a photography blog that had not been touched in quite some time. I have the battery charging and hope to find some time in the near future to get some more shots. This is another shot from my visit to Naples a couple months ago visiting my grandparents.

This has been the most blog slacking to date on my part but I will not apologize. Instead I will simply try to do better. However, it may not be possible to do better for the next couple weeks due to the fact that I do not have an internet connection. Right now I am chillin in some cafe in downtown g-vegas mooching an internet connection. I must admit that this year is much more better than last year. So far I have not had any work on weekends, not a single night of call, and I usually get home before 5:00. I just finished up 2 weeks of oncology and enjoyed it quite a bit. I worked more than I was supposed to but it has was interesting and the do I was working with did a good job of teaching me. Today I finished up my second day of nephrology and it was a nice change from my first day. Yesterday I worked with an old school doc who hated the new compuerized medical record system and was flustered by the fact that we were constantly running behind and his wife had fallen in the shower ealier that morning. I did however find some enjoyment watching him get fustrated with the computer and start hitting the computer while he said "shit" and dropped f bombs. Today on the other hand ran smoothly and was filled with teaching from another doc in the practice. Unfortunately the group I work with is pretty big and all the docs rotate between offices so I have not clue from day to day who I will be working with. Anyway...I must get going back home. I am tired of studying and would like to get home to continue on my journey to win the world cup. By the way...I took this pic while visiting my grandparents a couple months ago. I have not had much time to photoshop and actually just turned on my laptop for the first time in about 2 weeks. I thought this pic had a cool kind of postcard feel to it. Hope you enjoy and I will try and return sometime soon.

Daytime Star Trails

I had a blast at the beach over the weekend. As is typical with me when I drink I wake up at absurd hours and I am wide awake so at 4am I walked out the back door of the sweet house we were staying at and shot this. I had my tripod but I forgot the remote so I put the D70 in bulb mode and held the shutter with my finger for 8 minutes. Trying to hold down a shutter for 8 minutes while not moving the camera was not really going to happen with the tripod I used so these are not the smoothest star trails I have come away with. With a +1 exposure comp at 8 minutes and with the help of some strong moonlight I came away with a shot that almost looked as if it was shot during the day. Added some levels in CS to help with overall contrast and bumped colors in lab mode.

Took part one of my test today and had a blast bombing it. Tomorrow is round 2 but I stopped caring about 6 hours ago so no studying tonight. Just got back from Sams with 8 pounds of ground beef and 6 cases of beer. This weekend will definitely be fun. In honor of going to the beach here is an old shot I took in Charleston.

This was taken from the airport a couple weeks back. I shot this looking down into the plaza. I wish I had time to shoot a couple more but there was a family staring at me. I guess a dude with a shaved head taking pictures in an airport seems strange. I was surprised that security never bothered with me. The year is finishing up in a couple weeks so hopefully the update will come more often. As to the last post...I dont really know what it was either. It was a large concave disc on top of a boiler that was filler with sand. Not sure wuite what it did but it was part of the granite factory. I will try and process one of the pictures of the object it was on top of. Glad you are stopping by the site.

The Return

No updates in over about a month but I have my reasons. First, the new rotation is taking up much more time than previous ones. I only have about 1 month left and then things should improve into next year. Second, I do not have any pictures to post. Three weeks ago my external hardrive that had ALL my pics crashed. I had some older ones backed up but I have lost a good deal of my decent stuff. Thankfully I also have a bunch on my smugmug but I will miss having thr tiff and Raw files. I did find a program that allowed me to get all the info off the drive but it loses all filenames and structures. I have to wait til I can afford another drive before I attempt anything. I am not lookin forward to having one folder ripped from the drive with thousands of files simply named in sequential order. Main reason I am finally updating again is I shot some today. I was in a small town for a wedding and did some exploring this morning before anything went on. I will tell more about the adventures tomorrow. Off to bed for now.

I dont get too many landscape shots and this one explains why...not many pretty landscapes around these parts. Check out the exif on this shot. I failed to realize I was shooting ISO 1600 but thankfully I did not get any camera shake with a shutter speed of 1/8000. Anyway this is from the disasterous hike that I mentioned the other day. I should have cloned out the bird house in the water but I was lazy. I have been studying all day and shall continue into the night. Thats all for now...move along

This is the first time I went back to a location to get a shot because I was not happy with how my first shot came out. My first shot had a ton of blown highlights and my bracketing was sloppy at best. When I went back I managed to bracket the shot a little better and used Photomatix to help with the blending. I had a hard time keeping my shadow out of the picture but I love how the light was on the floor. Might have been a little better if it was shot about 20 minutes earlier but I dont really have any more time to shoot. This is shot through a broken window of an old hotel that is being renovated right next to the doctor's office I am working at. It was rather conviniet as I was able to throw my camera in my car and grab the shot as I left work a couple days ago. I would love to get inside of the building but it is right next to city hall which also serves as the police headquarters. I tried B&W but ended up resorting to my recent addiction...the lomo effect. This is probably one of my favorite shots in a while so I hope you enjoy it.

Back to the big city I go. This shot was from a compressor out back of an old motorcycle shop. As I was about to shoot the wheel it turned on and started spinning. I had to crank up the aperature in order to give a decent shutter speed to blur it out. Not much else to say today. Lots of studying to be done.

Things are getting a little better here as I become accustomed to the small town life. Nothing was open today because on Sunday everyone is in church. They still have not worked out the living arrangements so some sneaking is occurring. Yesterday we met the doctor at 4am to round on 28 patients. Our initial goal was to be finished by 10am but that time soon passed. We finally managed to leave around 3pm and instead of going home and taking naps we decided to be adventurous and go for a hike. We got directions from the doctor who said it would be about a 10 minute hike to a huge rock that overlooks a lake and a beaver damn. We decided to pack up and head out to study. Since we only planned on walking 10 minutes we both wore pants and sandals. Once we parked our car we headed out on the trail. About 15 minutes in we thought it had to be coming up soon. Again our trip was much longer than we planned. Apparently we missed the turn and the 10 minute hike turned into a 45 minute trek through the woods. Once we finally reached the rock we were disappointed to see the beaver damn was about 200 yards away and it was more of a swamp than a lake. We quickly gave up on trying to study and headed home to eat dinner and go to sleep. We started the morning early again today but today the only thing on our schedule was studying. After studying for 8 hours we needed an escape so we went out on the town to do some exploring. This shot is from some run down barn on the side of the main street in town. I have a couple more that I like and you should get them in the days to come. I also took one at the sweet rock with the beaver damn that I may post in a day or so. Sorry the updates have been weak but I have been rather busy.

Where Am I?

I am now out at my rural clerkship which means I am in the middle of nowhere. My female classmate and I arrived late last night and after unpacking we attempted to turn on the heat. Thankfully the heat was not working and the house was a brisk 52 degrees so I spent my first night here sleeping in pants, 2 shirts, a hoodie, socks, and under 3 blankets. This morning we were delighted to not have any hot water and it made my shower a joy. After eating we headed through the town and drove past all 3 stop lights to make it to where we will be working the next month. Soon after arriving we learned that despite the fact that we were 24 and 26 years old, it was completely unacceptable to be living in the same house with a member of the opposite sex in this town unless you were married. We were then given the opportunity to live with our attending which neither of us really looked forward to so as of now my partner and I will alternate days to drive about 1 hour to and from work each day. I know 1 hour is not a huge commute but when yor car is about to fall apart and you dont have money to fill your SUV with gas you try and find every excuse to stay off the road. It also sucks because we planned on keeping each other sane in this small town. The only redeeming quality at this point about this place is that the opportunities for urban/rural photography are endless. Now if i can just find some time to get away from work while it is light out. Working 6am til 7pm and having to study may limit the pics I can get here.

Today was my second attempt at shooting people on the streets. I went to the St. Patrick's Day festival in five points. It was def more impressive than I expected it to be and the streets were packed. For those of you tht dont know and care they block off the entire downtown area and have bars, bands, and food all over the place. Needless to say after a long day of drinkin beer and standing in the sun I am exhausted. I thought I would PP a quick shot for tonight to keep up with this blog thing. Saw this little boy at one of the rock band performances. Unfortunately it happened really quick and I blew some highlights but I still think this little dude rocks.

Last week I put a stat counter on the page but after I tried to remove it my entire template got screwed up and I had not saved it on my computer so all was lost. I decided to go with the 1 pic per page thing and to advance to the next page you can either click on the picture itself or click on the next post button next to the "about me" up top. Let me know what you think about the new look. All the old pics are still small and you will have to click them to blow them up. There is no way I am going to go back through all the old posts and fix the pics to take up the whole screen so deal with it. On the older posts just use the next post button to go to the next post. Here is another pic I took on the day trip to Charleston. I took a couple different angles and cropped it several different ways and I think I ended up liking this one the most. The pic is the front of a restaurant called Tommy Condon's. The food was decent but our server was nowhere good. If you are ever in the Charleston area I highly recommend a little place called Poogan's Porch. It is a historic home off the main street and we sat outside and had one of the best meals we have had in a long time and it was reasonably priced which is always good on a med student budget.

I was unable to frame it properly with my camera being 6 inches from the ground. so I kept guessing and after about 6 shots I managed to get one that looked decent. Back to cleaning my house.

Had a good day in Charleston and managed to get some good pics and some great food. Not much to say now other than I am tired and really do not want to go to work tomorrow. I could have spent more time on this in photoshop and played around with different filters but the first one I tried out (simple blur/haze filter) seemed to work well. I have been trying a new filter set called Nik Color Effects Pro 2 so some of the pics in the days to come may look a little different than my normal out of the camera shots. Let me know what you think.

Another day on call at the hospital and no new admits yet so it is pretty quiet for now. This is not really the image I planned on posting but logmein is down and I had this one in my email account. This is another IR but unfortunately the sun was setting and you usually need bright sun to get the bright whites. Also it is not as sharp as I would have liked. Since I have taken this picutre I have learned that IR and visible light have different focus points (which makes sense when you think about it). Since you are required to focus with the filter off I need to learn to compensate by slightly defocusing the visible image in the proper direction before shooting or I need to close down the aperture but I also dont want to have a 10 sec exposure so it looks like I still have some learning to do. I also picked up a copy of Photmatix so you may get some funky HDR images from charleston tomorrow. I guess I should do some more studying now.

I love taking macros but the sigma 70-300 APO DG def does not do macros justice. I need to grab a Tamron 90 2.8 but first I need $350. Feel free to hit the donation button to help a brother out. Other than the auction it appears I may have sold my first print which it exciting. One of the ladies that works at school emailed me asking to get a print of my dock with stars pic that I donated to the auction. She also asked if I could come out to the dock at her house and take a pic. She promised food and use of her boat...so I may have to take her up on the deal. Tried to update the blog last night but blogger was down. I hope to head to Charleston on Sunday so we should be seeing some new shots the next couple weeks. I will try and do a better job on updating b/c there are still a bunch of IR shots from the statehouse that are waiting to be posted. buh bye for now.

This shot is another one from the ghetto by the industrial park that we visited over the weekend. I am not quite sure how I get an aperture of 7.1 but that is what is in the exif. Fences Suck

FINALLY got out again to shoot and spent about 3 hours driving around with Mike. We drove through some super sketchy places and finally ended up crossing some railroad racks and arrived at an old run down industrial park....it was perfect. Well it was perfect except for one thing; the whole area was completely fenced in. We looked as much as possible for a place to get in but it was no use. We thought about asking the random people stumbling by the railraod tracks but then realized that was probably a terrible idea. We proceeded to drive around and find some building fronts to take pics of but we were both very annoyed. We have come to the realization (again) that we are only going to head out after we know where we are heading. This whole lets go on adventures thing has only worked out once so we need to change some things up. We also decided to exhaust Columbia before we think it might be a good idea to drive to nearby (or far away) towns. I have not even looked at my pics from today yet b/c I am still rather upset. After arriving home I was pumped to find that my Hoya R72 Infrared Filter finally arrived. I threw it on my camera and headed out back to take a quick shot and here it is. I guess I should look at some of the other pics but I am in no mood right now. Kind of sad my favorite pic in 4 hours today was taken out my back door.

In other news: The charity auction was last night and I decided to go with an oldie that I liked (This One). Mike did an awesome job framing it and matting it for me and I am sure the presentation helped to sell the photo. I think it sold for $75 which is about $30 more than I was hoping for. It is pretty exciting having someone think that my photo was cool enough to pay for and put up in their house. I am not sure who bought it but they have to be a very intelligent and well cultured individual.

I finally get a day to do some shooting and it rains non stop so I had to make do. I set up the ghetto studio in the office again and invited Mike over. The pics you will see the next couple days (or until the sun comes out again) were taken with 2 1/2 pounds of dry ice, some water, and his new Tamron 90mm 2.8 D. If you keep up with his blog you may start seeing duplicates b/c we did all the pics together. His name should also be on this pic but my action in photoshop to shrink and frame, saved the file before I could edit it. hoping to get back outside tomorrow.

I have no clue if this picutre looks good b/c i photoshopped it using logmein which only displays about 16 colors. I am on call tonight and had a pretty steller day. Got my first needle stick so I had to fill out all kinds of paperwork and whatnot. I was holding a retractor and the stupid scrub tech decided it would be cool to hit me in the back of the hand with a suture needle. Thankfully it was a solid needle and the dude was HIV nbegative. I am currently sitting at my computer with my glasses taped to my head. The stupid things broke last week and I have been on a quest to find new ones that look remotely decent on me. I found a couple pairs today that I liked but they have to order them so I will not get to see them til early next week. In the mean time I shall study with glasses taped to my head (I look like a rockstar). On to the picture...another star picutre from Maryland. Due to the direction I was facing in this one(east) didnt have the cool swirl. The color version was decent but I decided to change it up and convert this one to black and white with a new filter I got for photoshop. I am happy with how it came out. As for my life now...I am working on getting my schedule for next year finalized. I met with some people today and got some good input. I think I have it mostly figured out but I am sure some things will change. Sorry you are getting a lot of the same old in pictures but I have not had any time to shoot. Things will get better on family practice...at least I hope.

I was attempting to do some macro work with some water drops the other night and my camera started acting really strange. I began having problems with the flash not working and my pictures were turing wierd colors. Somehow I managed to get this shot which looks nothing like what I was shooting. I started freaking out and hoped my toy was not ruined. I took the battery out and let it chill and thankfully I have not had a problem since. Not quite sure what happened with this pic but it looks like a compter generated image. Kind of abstract but I figured it was a little different.

I am currently in the process of trying to study way too much to make up for my past 5 weeks of slacking but I am having problems even keeping my eyes open. In related photography news my new bag came in. I managed to score a camera/laptop backpack with a $80 rebate so I only had to pay shipping. The bag is pretty sweet but it it HUGE! Well back to the books...

My first attempt at taking smoke pics. Took this with my 50mm and used a borrowed SB-800 flash wirelessly. I def need to buy one of these flashes b/c it makes a huge difference. The wireless feature is pretty hott. Anyway...something a little different. I may try a couple more and see what I can do. Hope you enjoy.

Another shot from my adventures at the old mill last week. I cropped it a bit and added the aged processing while trying to leave a little color in the window. I never used to like pics like this but once you start playing around with various filters and effects, some of them just seem to work rather well for these pictures. I plan on trying to get some pictures with more life sometime soon but it has been rough with it being winter time in Columbia. Probably will get another star picture tomorrow....

Another pic from the old Mill shot with my 50mm. This was shot in a shed next to the main building. I think the shallow DOF works well for this picture. I tried some selective coloring but I ended up liking the color version in the end.

I decided to make some minor changes to my blog after seeing the update smugmug made to all of their galleries. I found a cool little thing that allows the pictures to pop up and load in front of the window you are looking at. However, blogger is dumb so it will only work if the entire page is loaded before you click the image to blow it up. Also after it does expand...just follow the instruction and hit the little x to close to picture (actually you can really click anywhere). Do not use the back button to exit the picture though b/c that will take you to the previous page you were looking at before my blog. Every so often it fails to work but if that happens it will work like it used to and then you can use that back button. Now on to the picture....

I took this one the 2 days ago while I was post call. Nothing really happened on trauma so I managed to get a good night of sleep. Mike and I headed out towards Sumter to see what we could find. After driving in a huge circle and not really seeing that much we came across an old mill on the side of the road. We headed up and asked the dude working there if we could just take pictures and he said fine so we did not have to trespass to get these (asking nicely is GAF). This one was the side of an old gas pump they had in a shed.

I finally managed to rig my PPC to be a remote for my D70 so I am now able to take excessively long exposures. This one is 735 secs and was taken from Greenpoint MD.
